Introducing Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT) and Prolotherapy at Pioneer Podiatry!

What is Prolotherapy?

This procedure is conducted under sterile conditions using a fine needle precisely aimed at the pain source. Administering the solution to the affected area can swiftly alleviate or eliminate pain during the appointment and stimulate the body's repair process. Full recovery typically occurs within 4 sessions, varying based on individual response.

Dextrose Prolotherapy

The original form, created in the 1930s, uses concentrated sugar water to cause mild inflammation, prompting the body to start healing. Dextrose Prolotherapy raises growth factor levels, aiding in tissue repair to relieve conditions like tendinopathies, ligament sprains, back and neck pain, tennis/golfers elbow, ankle pain, joint laxity and instability, plantar fasciitis, shoulder, knee pain, and other joint issues. It's commonly referred to as "Prolotherapy" and is widely practiced by physicians and Podiatrists globally.

Prolotherapy: Injection to repair weak or stretched ligaments or tendons and stabilize joints. Dextrose injection stimulates a brief inflammation process in the body to promote repair without causing significant damage.

Perineural Injection Therapy (PIT): Injection close to nerves to restore normal function and relieve chronic pain. This targets neurogenic inflammation caused by specific sensory nerves that can produce both healing and damaging proteins.

In a podiatry clinic, perineural injection therapy may be suitable for patients with various foot and ankle pain conditions

Conditions like Morton's neuroma, peripheral neuropathy, and tarsal tunnel syndrome involve nerve irritation or compression, leading to pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness in the feet and lower legs.

Are these injections painful?

While injections may be unpleasant, PIT treatments differ from standard injections. They involve micro-injections just beneath the skin, similar to multiple pin-pricks. Following the procedure, any injection-related discomfort typically dissipates promptly. The objective of each treatment is for patients to leave the consultation room without experiencing pain.

Effective

Every treatment aims to stop the pain. After the first treatment, pain relief may last for 4 hours to 4 days. Usually, 4 weekly treatments gradually reduce overall pain, with the goal of complete relief.

Safe

D5W is a common IV solution in hospitals around the world. It is mostly given as a subcutaneous treatment with a small needle to minimize harm.

Drug Free

The treatment involves giving several small injections just under the skin in painful areas where the nerves are sensitive. We use a solution called buffered D5W, which is dextrose 5% in sterile water.
